DescriptionThe subject depicted nearly full length, seated in front of a drapery in a library chair near a Hepplewhite Pembroke table and a bookcase filled with volumes. She is posed at a slight right angle, her elbow resting on the chair arms, hands one over the other, one hand holding what appears to be a book she has been reading. A green drape partly covers the bookcase and the area behind the sitter and the table. The subject wears a white tafetta or satin gown with a wide blue fringed sash and lace fichu joined at her thick brown upswept hair. She looks directly at the viewer, an emblem of the British upper class from this era.
