WALLACE M. BARRUS
born 1930
Wally Barrus is an Emeritus Professor of Visual Arts and Photography at Brigham Young University, and served for many years as the coordinator of the visual art academic photography program. Barrus holds a Bachelor of Art degree from BYU, and a Master of Fine Art degree from Utah State University. He retired in 1995 after thirty-seven years of service to BYU as an artist, photographer, filmmaker and faculty member.
He has been associated with photography and film production for more than fifty years, and has had experience as a commercial photographer, cinematographer, and visual art and photography educator.
He is a former member of the Professional Photographers Association of America, and a current member of the Utah Photographic Print Society and the Intermountain Professional Photographers Association.
He has worked as a cinematographer on many motion picture productions for the BYU motion picture studio, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and other clients. His photography has been widely published, and he has been featured in several one-man shows and has exhibited in numerous juried shows throughout the country.
In 1989 he was recognized by Photo Utah and the Salt Lake Tribune for his contribution to photography in the State of Utah. In 1992 he was selected as the recipient of the National Award, which is given by the Professional Photographers of America for outstanding service to photography.
Other activities include many years designing and building model aircraft. He uses his remote controlled aircraft for aerial photography. He is a member of the Academy of Model Aeronautics and is an experienced pilot.
In 2000-2001 he and his wife, Shirlene, served a Church Education Service mission to BYU-Hawaii. His assignment was to set up a digital photography program for their Advancement Department and University Publications, and Shirlene worked in the University Library. Wally is now serving at Southern Virginia University at Buena Vista, Virginia. He is compiling the photography for a hard bound picture book on the first decade of the university.
