RICHARD S. BUSWELL

b.1945
BiographyRichard Buswell documents the passing of time with powerful black and white images, showing the remains of human habitation on abandoned homesteads, farms, and mines in Montana. Using only natural light, the photographs are still lifes and landscapes combined. Buswell grew up around these Western images and the subjects relate to incidents and memories in the photographer's life.

Many of the structures in Buswell's photographs are already gone, destroyed by humans or acts of nature. But the images do more than document the past. They represent two histories - that of Montana at the turn of the century and that of Buswell's youth. His photographs are part of the permanent collection of many museums, including the Smithsonian, Boston's Museum of Fine Art, the Corcoran, George Eastman House, and the Library of Congress. Buswell also practices
pediatrics, allergy, and immunology in Helena Montana, having graduated with his MD from Oregon Health and Science University.
