WULF BARSCH

of Boulder, Utah, is one of Utah's finest and most interesting printmakers and painters. He was born in Reudnitz, Bohemia. He graduated from the Werkkunstchule in Hannover, Germany (1965-68) and obtained degrees from Brigham Young University (M.A., 1971; M.F.A., 1972); he joined the BYU faculty in 1972. Several exhibitions included "In the Desert--A Stranger in a Strange Land," Utah Museum of Fine Arts: "Most striking of all is the contrast between the still containment of his geometric forms . . . and the moving energy of surrounding air and earth and trees (cypress, palm, poplar) . . . . Both triangle and square have deep meaning . . . . For Barsch, as for Kandinsky, 'geometry is nothing if not romantic'" (Katherine Nelson, "Utah Holiday," October 1984; and "Wulf Barsch: Looking Toward Home," LDS Museum of Church History and Art, 1985-86). "Was there ever an artist less inclined to show off than Wulf Barsch? . . . It is that, I suppose, that gives his work the sense of deep sincerity that demands to be taken seriously. Wulf Barsch was born 27 August 1943 in Rendritz, Bohemia. He is married to Sandra Porter Barsh and has five children. He has taught painting and drawing at Brigham Young University since 1974.
