DescriptionIvory panel depicting Roman spectacle in a coliseum.

Spectacle in the coliseum with a wounded gladiator down, his sword on the ground, and the wild beast he was fighting towering over him. There are gladiators mounted on horses, a Roman soldier ready to kill the wounded gladiator if so advised, Roman with spear (missing) and a mahout on his elephant. The audience shows thumbs down to indicate to the Emperor their displeasure with the effort of the gladiator, thus passing a death sentence upon him. Special wood frame supports the ivory.
