DescriptionThe image is an illustration for the publication Harper's Weekly. The composition depicts four male figures and four horse-like figures in the center of a desert landscape. From left to right, the first male figure is lying on his back with several protrusions coming from arrow-like objects in his chest, he appears to be dead. The next male figure is in a seated position with a rifle-like object held in his proper right hand. Beside him is another male figure standing prostrate, also with a rifle in his proper right hand and is standing in the center of the work. The final figure is sitting with his body positioned towards the viewer, applying what appear to be bandages to his left leg. The horses are all lying down in a dead-like position encircling the four male figures.
