DescriptionDesk typewriter, Sholes and Glidden model. A sewing machine model. Keyboard consists of rectangular grid of 4 rows of 11 keys each. Type is on a type bar and strike is up.This machine represents the first factory-produced typewriter patented by Christopher L. Sholes and Carlos Glidden in 1868. In 1873 an agreement was made to manufacture the Sholes and Glidden machine ant the Remington Arms Company of Illon, New York, under the Remington name. Delivery of the first 1000 typewriters began in 1874. They were called the "sewing machine" models because the carriage return was operated by a treadle. Like all early typewriters, they worked on the understrike principle, making it impossible to see the letters being typed.
