BiographyAnne Currier received her B.F.A. at the School of Art Institute of Chicago, IL in 1972, and her M.F.A. at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA in 1974. She says, "I make ceramic sculptures that are shaped by the interplay of masses and voids. Projection and recession, light and shadow, substance and impression are the subject matter of my work. the shapes are the players, intersecting, extending, colliding or passing through/over/under/beyond one another to command space. The rich subletites and contrasts of winter colors here in Allegany County are sources for my glaze colors: charcoal blacks, slate/blue/grays, deep rusts and warms tans. Color and texture are intended to create and ambiguity about surface appears soft, it is hard and feels like sandpaper. When combined with light and shadow, these surfaces trigger visual illusions." Awards she has received have included: The Joseph Kruson Trust Fund Award for Excellence in Teaching ath the Alfred University in 2003, New York Foundation for the Arts, Individual Artist Fellowship in 1997, 1993, and 1988, the Virginia A. Groot Foundation, Evanston IL, Recognition Grant in 1991, and the National Endowment for the Arts, Visual Artists Fellowship in 1986.
