WULF BARSCH

1943-
Biographyof Boulder, Utah, is one of Utah's finest and most interesting printmakers and painters. He was born in Reudnitz, Bohemia. He graduated from the Werkkunstchule in Hannover, Germany (1965-68) and obtained degrees from Brigham Young University (M.A., 1971; M.F.A., 1972); he joined the BYU faculty in 1972. Several exhibitions included "In the Desert--A Stranger in a Strange Land," Utah Museum of Fine Arts: "Most striking of all is the contrast between the still containment of his geometric forms . . . and the moving energy of surrounding air and earth and trees (cypress, palm, poplar) . . . . Both triangle and square have deep meaning . . . . For Barsch, as for Kandinsky, 'geometry is nothing if not romantic'" (Katherine Nelson, "Utah Holiday," October 1984; and "Wulf Barsch: Looking Toward Home," LDS Museum of Church History and Art, 1985-86). "Was there ever an artist less inclined to show off than Wulf Barsch? . . . It is that, I suppose, that gives his work the sense of deep sincerity that demands to be taken seriously. Strangely enough, with all his moving solemnity "I find some of his things intensely romantic . . ." (Hugh Nibley, "From the Earth Upon Which Thou Standest," "Wulf Barsch: Looking Toward Home," (1985-86). (b. August 27)
