DescriptionThe image is the combination of a portrait and an interior domestic scene; a solitary aged female figure is seated in a sparsely finished room clothed as if in mourning with a somber colored gown, a dark cloak, and a dark hat. The figure faces the left corner of the support her face in three-quarters profile, she gazes down into nothingness while clasping her hands together on her lap. On the left of the room the wall has a window that lights the figure, in the corner of the room two books and a lamp are placed on a covered table, on the back wall the corner of a hung painting can be seen.
