DescriptionThe image is an outdoor, historical scene of a wagon train crossing the plains during the westward expansion of the U.S. In the foreground there is a prominent wagon that is pulled by four oxen. A man stands in the lower right corner with his back facing the viewer and his arms raised; he holds a whip in his proper right hand. There is a group of women and children who are riding in the nearest wagon and are visible in the front opening of the wagon covering. One man pushes the front wheel of the wagon and another man pushes from behind the wagon. Two women and a young girl stand in the lower left corner of the painting. The wagon train stretches back towards the left and in the background it swoops up on a hill toward the right side of the painting. In the background on the right side of the work there is a group of green shrubbery. There is also a man riding a dark horse towards the left side of the work in the background of the upper left quadrant. The sky is light blue with white clouds stretching across the sky horizontally.
