ELBERT H. EASTMOND

1876-1936
Biographyof Provo, was born in American Fork, Utah. Essentially a self-taught artist to begin with, Eastmond traveled to more easterly centers early in the century. He studied first at the Art Institute of Chicago (1901) and then Pratt Institute in New York City (1902) before crossing the continent to continue his work under John Lemos at Stanford University (1903-4). Then he trained in Europe, spending time in a number of Continental centers before the outbreak of World War I. Back in this country by 1915, Eastmond was a stronger printmaker than painter. Then, in 1921, Eastmond became head of the art department at Brigham Young University, a position he held until his death. This artist's studio output is often seen in small sketches, renderings, and other possibly less complete works. His reputation endures, however, mainly upon the basis of his teaching accomplishments. (b. June 1; d. August 17)
