LEE DEFFEBACH

born 1928
BiographyBorn in Houston, Texas, this artist is one of the finest and most expressive painters ever to work in this state. A longtime Salt Lake City resident, Deffebach is well known elsewhere for her abstract expressionist and color filed painting, even though her pursuit of the various levels of visual truth has led to excellent usages of traditionalist and pop art means as well. Graduating from the University of Utah (1949), she also studied at the Art Students League in New York, and on a Fulbright Scholarship in Italy, Turkey, and North Africa. Deffebach has won awards for her work at many local exhibitions and has taught at both the Salt Lake Art Center and the University of Utah. A quiet person, she speaks via painted creations that have great strength as statements of personal mood. Color in light, extreme sensitivity of personal mood, and a total knowledge of how to explore and then reach an aesthetic destination are the components of Deffebach's unique eloquence in paint. (b.
