DescriptionThe image is an illustration for the publication Harper's Weekly. There are six individual images combined to create a collage of different scenes from the expanding west. The first image, located at the top in a circular frame, depicts a male figure with a horse in the center; the background consists other figures and horse as well as a small structure. The second image, which is directly behind the first, depicts a spacious landscape with some rock-like features in the foreground. The third image is directly beneath the first two and depicts a ranch with a small house-like structure in the lower left corner, horses and cattle fill most of the mid-ground of the scene with a mountainous landscape in the background. The fourth image, bottom right, is a canyon landscape with a river flowing through it. The fifth image, bottom left, is a canyon with railroad tracks. The sixth and finale image, bottom middle between the right and left images, depicts a male figure wearing a cowboy hat and riding a horse; they are sanding in profile facing to the right.
