DescriptionA stylized desert landscape is the settling for a grouping of figures. On the left, a large group of men, women, and children stand facing the right of the canvas. Dressed in pioneer attire, many of the figures carry either farming tools or rifles. On the right, a single male figure stands out front with his arms extended holding a book in his right hand, his left hand holding a plow. Behind him a man and women stand in front of a small log cabin. The foreground is red clay desert with sage brush, on both the right and the left a pair of sheep graze. A manmade ditch, right of center, is filled with running water that cascades off the canvas. The background shows distant mountains with stylized clouds above that form an open hand.
